  Lineslip Regatta 3rd and 4th June 2009

It was looking like it could have been a bit of a drifter - which is beginning to sound like the gist of the whole year so far.  But at least the sun was forecast to be with us for the 2 days of racing.

After our briefing at 1000 in Port Hamble, we all headed out to the mid-Solent, where we noticed that the breeze was building, so not bikini weather after all!  Racing started with the 40.7 fleet at 1305, and division 2 starting 10 mintues later.

Division 1 (40.7's) and 2 (IRC handicap racing) had slightly different courses, but all involved a fair amount of spinnaker work and some tasty upwind legs.  Race 1 was won by Portia, raced by Ince and Co (Div 1) and Eric the Barbarian, raced by G Breslin (Synd One318 -Div2).  By the start of race 2, we soon realised that there were 2 yachts with a more interesting view of the racing:  they'd found Bramble Bank and were therefore waiting for the next tide....

Race 2  saw conditions freshening slightly, and then there was a disaster at the start of the 40.7 fleet:  Storm (HSBC) and Big Bamboo (Ince boat 2) had a bit of a collision - so did not start and headed in.  With a much shorter race, the 40.7's course taking 55 minutes and the division 2 boats only 40 minutes.:  winners were the same again, with Allied World coming in a close second in D1 and Lutine and the LlYC crew 30 seconds later in D2, after some amazing tactical calls by Peter Young.

We headed into the Yacht Haven, where crews met for a traditional beer on Lutine, then headed their individual ways to get ready for the evening meal at the Royal Yacht Squadron.  This also included a charity auction for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, which all went rather well.  A beer on the way home in the Anchor, then a few more on Lutine meant that for some it was a reasonably late night - others took the more sensible option....

Day 2, and with all 7 boats back in Division 1 and all 5 in Division 2, it was looking like it could be a good day racing - but for the lack of wind.  The Solent was like a mill pond.  Whilst some sat reading the papers, others amongst us were spotting for the breeze - them we saw it filling in from the East.  We were off sailing again, and the first race for D1 started at 11:15.

Portia won D1 again, as did Eric the Barbarian , D2.  Light wind sailing saw crew weight being distributed about the boats and trimming taken to the extremes!

It was after race 3, whilst milling about and waiting for the finishers, that I heard a clunk on the deck, only to realise that the pin had falled out of the gooseneck - which led to the boom dropping and hitting one of our poor unsuspecting crew members on the head.  Not knowing what was going on, he blamed the helm for an unsuspected gybe, whilst 2 of us dropped the main, removed the kicker, replaced the gooseneck, replaced the kicker and re-hoisted, just as the 10 minute gun went!

Race 4 started at 1300, and took a little under an hour for all classes.  Portia won D1 again, followed by Tarka (KIBIS),  with Eric taking the line again in D2, and Dumbledore (Lloyd's) in second place.

Race 5, and the final race, was the shortest at about 35 minutes, and ended with Tarka taking line honours in D1, and Portia second, with Eric taking their 5th first, followed again by Dumbledore.

As we headed in to the prizegiving, we all commented on what a fantastic 2 days sailing we had.

Thanks to Ince, KBIS, Allied World, Hiscox, Post Magazine, HSBC, One318 Breslin, Lloyd's, LlYC, Woodbrooke and Temple Legal for making this a great regatta.  Look forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Dinner and of course, next year.
