LLYC member, Anthony Llewelyn-Davis, comes first equal in the Two Handed Channel Triangle Race.

Anthony Llewelyn-Davis, a long standing member of LLYC, has reported that he and his crew, Marc Smith, on his boat Doris Minor, a Sigma 362, came equal first in the Channel Triangle Two Handed Race. Sadly they were downgraded to 2nd on the count back. Even more satisfying to Anthony than this superb result in the two handed class was that they came equal 2nd overall, downgraded to 3rd on the same basis.

This event is organized by Royal Southampton Yacht Club and was held on 4-11 June 2005. It goes from the Solent to Deauville, then to St Peter Port returning to the Solent for the last leg. Fun both from a social point of view and for the sailing. The only time Doris had to beat was from St Peter Port past the Casquets. The last leg was exciting and hard work, with five gybes in the last hour up the West Solent with only two up with and Doris’s biggest spinnaker. On that leg a dozen boats finished with 5 minutes of each other so as you can imagine there was serious competition up to the line. Doris even overtook a Swan 40, 200 metres from the line!

Unfortunately the Solent/Santander race, again organized by Royal Southampton, was not quite so successful for Doris. The race started on 2 July and a bad first night against a SW5/6 did not serve Doris well, but from 17th out of 18 at Ushant they got back to 12th by the time they got to Spain. At one time off Ushant they had a SOG of 1.5 kts, but were doing 7.5 knots through the water, some tide! They almost had a 200 mile 24 hour run through the Biscay but fell 9 miles short. Anthony stated that it made him think back to all those moments when one could have perhaps pushed that bit harder. Having started on Saturday at 11.00am they got to Santander early afternoon on Wednesday. This race on Doris was Anthony with Struan Wallace, and as Anthony said it is a lot easier to take the ferry. He questioned whether he was getting a bit too old for this short handed stuff and that a club cruise seems rather more comfortable.

Anthony and Doris Minor looks forward to seeing us all out there.
