Many members will remember John Gates, who sailed with the club for many years.
John died
suddenly recently, and our deepest sympathies go to his wife, Louise,
his 3 daughters, and the extended family. The latest addition to
the family, John's granddaughter Freya, was born shorly after John
passed away.
John's funeral
is being held on Monday 21st January, near his home in St. Margarets.
The family have requested that donations are made to the RNLI in
lieu of flowers, and all attendees are welcome back to the family home
afterwards. A number of club members will be attending.
There are many happy memories of John's times with the club:
'One always knew
all was right with the ship if one heard the familiar three knocks as
John tapped his pipe free of ash on the gunwhale sometimes to the
chagrin of a sleeping skipper in his off watch quater berth!'
'John was my
watchleader, on my first race with Lutine. It was a filthy night,
beating into a strong headwind all of the way to Cherbourg.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the lasting memories from that weekend
involve John. In particular coming on watch at 7am, to see John
raid the beer locker, only to be amazed at the speed he could move at
when the mainsheet block parted shortly afterwards'
